Taken by Lieut Philip Trayler when leading a boarding party, it was attached to a life boat. Lieut Trayler was in charge of the mine sweeping equipment on a flotilla of 6 corvettes and was based in Alexandria

Corporal R Meade served in WWI with the Somerset Light Infantry and in WWII as a Lieutenant in No.10 Somerset (Bridgwater) Battalion. He was Platoon Commander of the Middlezoy Home Guard. The Platoons Spigot Mortar was kept on his farm at Greinton. A picture of Lt Meade can be seen in Jeffrey Wilson's book "The Somerset Home Guard"

The Vendor states that his father serving with the Royal Engineers crossed the Rhine in an inflatable boat under fire and jumped into the nearest trench, on landing they found a senior NCO or officer in full dress and liberated the above items together with his Luger and boots etc (the latter were disposed of long ago). Also included with this lot a photograph and ration book etc belonging to the vendor's father.

With a late pattern Turtle shape Steel Helmet with net cover and chin strap. Uniform jacket badged to Captain with Gloucester, bronzed collar badges medal ribbons to end of war only, correct buttons (good, some contemporary repairs). Blues Jacket and Trousers supplied by Moss Bros., no rank insignia, ribbons to end of war, one button replaced by staybright (could do with a clean otherwise good). Ephemera includes booklets on Jungle Warfare, Japanese money for Burma occupation, information on Gurkhas (2nd King Edward VII Own) various documentation to do with the Territorials, exercises etc.
It is believed that Lt Hillerby served with the Gurkhas during the war

David Hillyard built pinnaces and other small wooden vessels for the Admiralty in the First World War, the firm continues in business today.
