These were presented to Mr R H Berryman who was sent to the VW factory in Wolfsburg in 1947 after WWII. He was detailed to get production going at the plant to supply the needs of the army, other occupying forces, the Control Commission and some for the German economy. Because the factory had been used in the production of mortar bombs, V1 and V2 parts it had been scheduled for demolition, however cars needed to be made somewhere and if not in Germany then they would have to be paid for. The Government was therefore keen to prove that sufficient numbers of cars could be made at the plant, so that it would not be demolished. Mr Berryman was instrumental in getting the factory going again, utilising the machines that had not been destroyed in the war and organising the workforce, thereby saving the factory from demolition. He had served in the RAF during WWII and previously worked for General Motors so was experienced in mechanics and the car industry.
