A Russian gold, enamel, hardstone and ivory baton, the smokey-quartz finial modelled as a chrysanthemum, a cluster of yellow citrines forming the stamens, the gold and translucent green guilloche enamel collar decorated with swags, with tapering ivory shaft, unmarked, two very slight chips to petals of chrysanthemum, overall length 15.75", enclosed within the original silk and velvet lined holly-wood case, with the Imperial Warrant printed in gold.
Reputed to have been a gift from Tsar Nicholas II, to the conductor of the Bolshoi Ballet.

27. A Lalique opalescent glass vase of cylindrical form, moulded in high relief with figures of mermaids, etched mark in capitals on the underside of the base, R. LALIQUE FRANCE, very slight chip to the body of one mermaid, 5" high, 3.5" diameter.

28. A 19th Century bronze figure of a cherub, illustrative of the Arts, after Clodion, seated on a tasselled cushion, raised on black marble rectangular base, overall length 6.5", 7.25" high

A Dieppe carved ivory Triptych figure of a bearded courtier in Renaissance style costume, wearing a hat with elaborate patterned cloak, and sword, holding a book and gauntlet, the interior, opening to reveal a triptych carved in high relief depicting period costume scenes, raised on octagonal ebony plinth, French 19th Century, overall height 9.625"
30. A fine interchangeable barrel antique Music Box and Table en-suite by Jean Billon-Haller
The brass and nickel-plated movement with zither, the double spring barrels crank wound, stamped on the "endless cock" with the trademark of Jean Billon-Haller, a butterfly with it's wings spread (The letter "J" appearing in the left wing and "B" in the right). The words Swiss Made also appears stamped into the stop/start mechanism which is of unusual design.
The box with ebonised mouldings and walnut mirror-veneered panels having triple line boxwood stringing within a crossbanded border of mahogany "a quatre faces". The lid additionally with mother-of-pearl inlay, the table with ebonised mouldings and quarter veneered walnut top similarly triple strung in boxwood and cross banded in mahogany "a quatre faces". The apron frieze panels of walnut similarly strung and crossbanded, the front with two drawers for the nine 11" cylinders and on ebonised cabriole legs, Swiss c.1875

Jean Billon Haller had his workshops in Geneva which were known to have existed until approximately 1895. He was a maker of extraordinary ingenuity designing and then taking out several patents on modifications to the movements, some of which being most unusual and appear in this music box. These include a "Direct drive onto cylinder" a "Straight crank arm with loud click" and "Unusual swing-over cylinder clamps"

47. LUCAS, SUZANNE. Nine original watercolour designs for greetings cards, mostly signed with monogram, and eight designs for bookmarks. Printed sheets of perforated "stamps" that she designed for the Chest & Heart Association, together with her original watercolour and gilt design for an alternative, c.1956-59. With two rolls of watercolour for floral wallpaper, an album of printed greetings cards and a sheet of watercolour sketches for the same; eight catalogues with mounted examples of "Susi Lucas" cards. Together with a quantity of zinc printing plates for cards and a large quantity of printed greetings cards from the same.
48. LUCAS, SUZANNE. A large quantity of ephemera largely associated with her extensive travels in the 1930's and 1940's, comprising, briefly: photographs and postcards of Ismailia; photographs of the Suez Canal; an album of photographs of India; postcards of Hitler and Mussolini; a group of 15 postcards of the Winter Olympics 1936, with tickets and a lapel silk flag; tickets, certificates, advertising & hotel billheads, menus, invitations to dances largely military at Ismailia, "1st Brigade Motorisee du Congo" etc. A signed photograph of the dancer Harald Kreutzberg, various ballet programmes, Ballets Russes Monte Carlo etc. with covers designed by Picasso, Cocteau etc. Also a quantity of paper currency, various autograph books, one inscribed "Suzanne Craven Lucas, c/o Suez Canal Company, Ismailia" Also approximately 200 colourful hotel luggage labels for hotels in Luxor, Grenada etc. With an original pastel drawing by E. 49. GALE, NORMAN (1862 - 1942; POET) An extensive series of autograph letters to (Lydia Jennie) Winifred Craven (1886-1984, the first dated 1919, the last 1942. Approximately 190 letters (ca.400-sides 4to and 90-sides 8vo)
50. GALE, NORMAN (1862 - 1942; poet). Manuscript verse etc. comprising approximately 300 original autograph poems (on ca. 400 4to leaves) of which about 20 signed; all in his distinctive hand. Fifty-one of these with manuscript title-leaf "Glances by Norman Gale", others were written for the unpublished "A Bending of the Bow"; an index leaf, headed "Serious Poems", is also present. Together with a quantity of typescript verse, some with annotations and additions in Gale's hand. Together with two typescripts of the second half of the unpublished "The Young Heart" with 6 autograph poems (10-pages) inserted; the typescript of "Remembrances" (published in 1937); the typescript of the unpublished "Recoveries - Thirty Essays by Norman Gale" with Gale's annotations and with 25-pages of the original manuscript; and the typescript of Gale's unpublished novel "Love in London (Three-and-Thirty- Years-Ago)" 289-pages.

CRAVEN, LYDIA JENNIE WINIFRED (1886 - 1984) A large quantity of her unpublished manuscripts and typescripts of short stories, a novel and plays, many of the typescripts annotated and corrected by hand. Included are "The Robe of Saint Bride" the manuscript and typescript with one leaf of suggestions for the work in the hand of Norman Gale to his "Dear and Earnest Pupil". Also a vast typescript, 724-pages, of her novel "Joiner's Hall, a Yorkshire Tale" written under her pseudonym "John Garden". Also "The First of June", "Saint of the Slipper" (approx. 100,000 words); "Place of Holiday"; & "Another Story", etc. etc. Also her diary for the first 6-weeks of 1939 and a leather bound notebook containing 4-pages of observations on her work in Norman Gale's hand concluding "I like the "Place of Holiday" intensely and only you could have written it"
As far as we are aware none of the above works were published. She did, however, publish in 1984, a book that she commenced in the 1940's and intended publishing at the time, titled "Aboudi, Man of Luxor". She had met Mohammed Aboudi, author of a guide to Egyptian antiquities, whilst travelling in Egypt. Aboudi was present at the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun and, surprisingly, was secretary to Cole Porter. Three variant typescripts of the book are included with this lot, together with a copy of the printed book, a large photograph of Aboudi, signed postcards, an Aboudi guide book with loosely inserted notes on his life dictated to Lydia Craven, 15 autograph letters from Aboudi, and other pieces.
