NB: The Dalhousie was an Indian teak built ship, the property of Mr Allan, Shipowner and chartered to Messrs Fry and Davidson, as one of the "White Horse" Australian passenger ships. On the 18th October the ship set sail in a fresh breeze, the wind increased and the ship started to lurch and was having difficulty recovering. The crew began jettisoning items but the ship gave a violent lurch and the sea washed over her eventually she foundered off Beachy Head. Fifty lives were lost, the only survivor was Joseph Reed, Seaman whose account of the disaster can be found in a copy of the Southport Visitor October 28th 1853. A copy of the illustration of the ship taken from the Illustrated London News Oct 29th 1853 is included with the lot
